I met Carolyn Wonderland in Houston in the spring of 1991, when she was probably about 18 years old. She had an old acoustic guitar with scalloped frets, and she'd started to play the clubs that would let her in. Even back then, she had the voice of a woman 2 or 3 times her age. The soulful expression she could belt out was overpowering. A few weeks after I bought my Chapman Stick, she invited me to play a few songs at a weekly open-mic jam she hosted at Blythe Spirits. The idea was, even though I could barely play the Stick, I could probably play it better than anyone else in the room, so I might as well bring it in and show it off.
This roll was shot at one of her weekly shows at the Last Concert Cafe in downtown Houston where she's played every Tuesday for quite a few years.
